On February 12–14, 2015, the RootsTech conference again took place in Salt Lake City, Utah. On Friday, there were classes particularly geared toward family history center directors. On Saturday, a special family discovery day was held. The sessions of the RootsTech Family Discovery Day were designed to help and inspire families and Church members to find and discover family names, prepare names to take to the temple, and teach and share their personal experiences with others.
For those directors planning Family Discovery Day, classes can now be viewed and downloaded here under RootsTech Videos. Many classes are offered in 10 different languages. Change the language options at the top right of the page below the toolbar. All classes can be watched or downloaded. FamilySearch encourages you to download the videos if you are planning to show the class to a group. You will not be dependent on Internet strength on the Discovery Day if your classes are downloaded to the computers you are using. Classes focusing on family history center directors and priesthood leaders were taught in 4 sessions at RootsTech. Videos of those sessions will be posted soon on the Director Page on LDS.org
In 2014, some 1,111 stakes from various countries signed up to host a family history fair using RootsTech resources. Many hearts were touched and many lives were blessed as local members together with their priesthood leaders engaged in family history activities. One stake president from Brazil commented, “At different times during the preparation for the fair and during the fair itself, I felt a great spirit of love. We had wonderful spiritual experiences and a feeling of understanding and involvement that I had never felt before.”
Family history center directors play a pivotal role in making a family discovery day a successful experience in their local area. Directors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the resources that will be made available online after RootsTech and then take the initiative to propose to their own priesthood leaders to host a family discovery day. This event will benefit all Church members, including new converts and the youth, encourage temple name submissions, and create great opportunities for missionary work.
