I feel so blessed to be associated with you in this miraculous work of family history. I marvel at how the Lord is hastening the work of salvation through the acceleration of records access. Let me share just a few of the miracles that illustrate how the Lord is hastening records availability to help Church members find their ancestors:
Memory Costs Falling: Just ten years ago, the price of a single gigabyte of memory was $1.24. Today it is less than three cents per gigabyte. Why is this important? Our fully digitized record collection requires about 30 petabytes of memory storage. Each petabyte is a million gigabytes. The entire Library of Congress, about 17 million books, would only occupy about 3.5 petabytes if fully digitized. To make our collection available online ten years ago would have cost more than US$40 million per year just in memory costs versus less than US$1 million today. Memory costs are continuing to decline, which is fortunate because our collection continues to grow at a very rapid pace.
Load Times Decreasing: Ten years ago, the average time to upload a record image to a computer was about 32 seconds. Today it is 0.23 seconds. Many are a bit frustrated by screen load times today; a decade ago it would have been exasperating.
Nations’ Doors Opening: Even just five years ago, we were struggling to keep our camera crews busy with enough record image contracts with records archives. Today, the Lord is opening the doors of the governments of nations at a rate that we struggle to keep up with. National agreements have been signed with Italy and Guatemala for hundreds of millions of records, with many other agreements in the works. In 2013, nearly 400 new contracts were signed for nearly one-half billion new record images.
Perhaps the biggest miracle of all in the hastening of the work of record access is all of you. The army of volunteers of which you are a part is moving the work forward at an unprecedented rate. The tremendous growth in available records and temple work would not be possible without your involvement.
Isn’t it great to be a part of the Lord’s miracle?! May He bless you greatly for the work that you are helping to roll forward at such an accelerated pace.
