Tagging Photos on FamilySearch

MainImageTag

One of the best features of Family Tree is the ability to add photos and stories about individuals. Tagging the photos—identifying who is pictured in the photo—is an important step in sharing your precious family photos. Tagging can be done in two ways—first, after upload from the Photos detail page, and second, through the Family Tree person page.

Photos detail page—After uploading an image, you can immediately click on it in the My Photos page to visit the Photos detail page and add tags. Simply click on a face in the photo where you want to add a tag, and the circular tagging tool will appear. You can drag to position the tag or adjust the size, and add the person’s name. If you have already tagged a certain individual, his or her name will appear in a drop-down list as you type. Once all the faces you know are tagged, you can navigate to the Tagged Person page to connect an individual in the photo to a person in Family Tree. See a video tutorial.

Family Tree person page—There is an Add Photo button on the Photos page for any individual in Family Tree. Clicking that button brings you to a page that shows thumbnails of all the photos you have uploaded to FamilySearch Photos and Stories. If you check the boxes near any of the thumbnails and click the Attach Photos button at the top of the screen, you will attach the selected photos to the individual. Keep in mind that the tag created for each image using this method covers the entire image, making this method more effective for tagging photos of a single person rather than photos for a group—group photos call for multiple tags.

Editing a tagYou can easily edit, resize, or delete a tag in the Photos detail page. Click on the name of the tagged person to reveal a drop-down menu with different tools. Click Edit Tag to resize or move the tag. Click Remove Tag to delete the tag for that individual. Editing a tag is especially important when removing a general tag placed on a group photo in the Family Tree person page and replacing it with tags for each individual.

Since the number of people uploading images—as well as the number of images—is growing so quickly, many of our users have already started to discover family photos they have never seen before. Check today—you never know what you might find.
