Do you have Norwegian ancestors with non-patronymic names? A great source in finding these ancestors from Norway is the Munthe Collection: genealogi og personal historie.
The Munthe Collection includes a collection of research notes, pedigree charts, newspaper clippings, correspondence, extractions of church records, censuses, and probate records compiled by Gerhard Munthe, Hartvig Andreas Munthe ( nephew of Gerhard), and Christopher Morgenstierne Munthe (son of Hartvig) that they compiled while searching out their family history and genealogy.
The collection contains handwritten, detailed information about families who came to Norway from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Scotland and elsewhere in Europe, and is a wonderful source for finding ancestors with a non- patronymic name. The collection is indexed in alphabetical order by the first letter of the surname only, starting with the Angell family (Lorentz Mortensen Angell was born in Germany in 1624). Besides the name Angell, you will find other names, such as the following: Brun, Bugge, Chrystie, Glad, Kaas, Munthe, Pavels, and Vogt. The collection includes genealogical information about the three compilers:
- Gerhard Munthe was born January 4th 1795 on the farm Ytre Kroken in Hafslo Parish, Sogn og Fjordane County in Norway. He was the son of Hartvig Kaas Munthe (1766-1830) and Bolette Christine Pavels. Gerhard Munthe died December 15th 1876 in Hafslo.
- Hartvig Andreas Munthe was born December 9th, 1845 in Elverum, Hedmark, Norway, the son of Christopher Pavels Munthe and Christine Margrethe Pavels Aabel. Hartvig was married May 29th 1874 to Jeanette Camilla Johannessen. Hartvig died June 17th 1905 in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway.
- Christopher Morgenstiererne Munthe was born July 14th 1875 in Kristiania (Oslo), Norway, the son of Hartvig Andreas Munthe and Jeanette Camilla Johannessen. He died December 21st, 1939 in Oslo. Christopher never married.
The Munthe Collectio was filmed by the University Library in Oslo, Norway, and is also available on microfilm at the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is available at the FHL on 7 microfilms, roll numbers 1693883-1693889. You can also visit a local family history center and order copies for viewing.
So, if you are searching for ancestors in Norway who descend from European immigrants with a non-patronymic name, make sure you check the Munthe collection.
