Congratulations on your call as a stake indexing director! Great blessings await you as you faithfully serve. Through your example and efforts, you will assist in hastening the Lord’s work and may ultimately help thousands of Church members find their ancestors and take their names to the temple!
While supporting indexers and arbitrators may be your focus much of the time, your calling is also an invitation to help Church members participate more fully in family history and temple work by seeking out and providing saving ordinances for their ancestors. Use the links below to become more familiar with your responsibilities and the resources available to help you in your calling.
Responsibilities
- Set an example by participating in all aspects of family history and temple work:
- Find family names.
- Take family names to the temple (with your family or share with others).
- Teach family and others.
- Index and arbitrate records.
- Counsel with priesthood leaders:
- Understand and support objectives of stake leaders (not just family history objectives).
- Meet often to share spiritual experiences and reports of your progress.
- Invite priesthood leaders to learn how to index.
- Recruit volunteers:
- Invite others to begin or resume indexing. Look especially for stake members who are fluent in a non-English language and invite them to index in that language.
- Explain to volunteers the growing importance of indexed records for finding names to take to the temple.
- Teach consultants and family history center staff how to index.
- Train and support indexers and arbitrators:
- Hold training meetings that teach both the spiritual and technical aspects of indexing.
- Communicate frequently with indexers and arbitrators through system messages and personal communication.
