Dcam User Guide-Installation and Upgrades

This section contains instructions for DCam Software install, uninstall, upgrade, and downgrade.

DCam Versions

Important: DCam version 9.0 and above does not support Standard mode. To use Standard mode, install a DCam version prior to 9.0.

The latest version of DCam software is copied to each external hard drive before being shipped. If DCam finds a newer version on the external hard drive, an upgrade dialog will display.

The latest version of DCam software can be downloaded here: https://office365lds.sharepoint.com/sites/DCam. Files on this page are available to download for convenience, emergency, or for extenuating circumstances.

Determining the DCam Installer File Version

To determine the version of DCam you will be installing, look at the installer file name. DCam version numbers follow this pattern: Major.Minor.Patch-Build.

For example, if the name of the file is “dcam_install_v1.2.3-456.exe”, the version number is 1.2.3-456. The major version is 1, the minor version is 2, the patch version is 3, and the build version is 456.

Determining the Installed DCam Version

The currently installed version of DCam is listed in the following places:

  • In the title of the DCam desktop shortcut.
  • In the title of the DCam Windows shortcut. Click the Windows Start icon, then click the FamilySearch folder.
  • On the opening screen when DCam is starting up.
  • In the upper left corner of the DCam application title bar.
  • In the About DCam dialog. Click the main Help menu and select About.

DCam Software Install

This section is for installing DCam software on a computer where none is currently installed. Note that installing DCam also installs a Places database or updates the existing database.

Step 1: Open the DCam SharePoint web page from https://office365lds.sharepoint.com/sites/DCam.

Step 2: Click DCam Software Versions.

Step 3: Hover the mouse pointer over the DCam installer.

  • Click the three dots, which will appear to the right of the mouse pointer.
  • Click Download from the context menu.

Installing DCam

Before installing DCam, be sure all folders in all listings have a Shipped or Completed status. If you are unable to do so, please contact a supervisor before proceeding.

Step 1: Find the DCam installer folder in Windows Explorer. If the installer is in a zip archive, extract the archive.

Step 2: Double click to launch the DCam installer.

Step 3: Follow the instructions on all dialogs.

  • If a dialog opens and asks if you want to allow this app to make changes to your device, click Yes.
  • On the InstallShield Wizard dialog, click Next.
  • On the Ready to Install the Program dialog, click Install.
  • On the InstallShield Wizard Completed dialog click Finish.

Step 4: When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

DCam Software Uninstall

Step 1: Find the uninstall icon on the desktop and double-click it.

  • If step 1 does not work or is not an option, click the Windows icon, typically located in the bottom-left corner of the screen. From here you can view a list of all installed applications. Find and click FamilySearch, then click Uninstall DCam.

Step 2: Follow the instructions on all dialogs.

On the Windows Installer dialog, click Yes.

  • If a dialog opens which asks if you want to allow this app to make changes to your device, click Yes.

Step 3: When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

DCam Software Upgrade

If installing a newer version of DCam software, uninstalling the currently installed software is typically unnecessary. Before installing DCam, be sure all folders in all listings have a Shipped or Completed status. If you are unable to do so, please contact a supervisor before proceeding.

Step 1: Follow the instructions on all dialogs (See Step 3 of Installing DCam).

Step 2: When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

DCam Software Downgrade

A downgrade occurs when the application to be installed has a lower version number than the version currently installed. For example, replacing DCam version 9.0 with DCam version 8.2 or lower would be a downgrade.

Downgrading DCam is not supported. If you experience image capture issues after upgrading DCam, do not downgrade the software. Doing so may cause additional problems, potentially creating longer work delays or causing you to lose completed work. Rather than performing a downgrade, report the issue immediately. If you are unable to capture images for any reason, the issue will be given top priority. Support will be provided as soon as possible and continue until you can resume image capture.
