Before you start
- You can access record images through Search Historical Records or Explore Historical Images.
- Legal agreements between FamilySearch and the organization that owns the image can sometimes prohibit downloading.
- You can download images one at a time. Click and open a specific image in the viewer.
Steps (website)
- Find and open the image that you want to download.
- If searching from the Historical Records, click View Original Document on the main record page to open the image.
- In the top-right corner of the image viewing window, click the download icon. It appears as an arrow pointing down.
- Some records allow you to customize your download options. Customization options appear in a pop-up field after you click the download icon.
- Depending on your browser, the download happens automatically, or you must save the image first. Check the online help for your browser if you have questions.
- If you are unable to download the image, it likely has restrictions that prevent downloading. Hover the mouse pointer over the download icon to read about restrictions, if any.
Steps (mobile app)
- Open the Family Tree app.
- Navigate to Search Historical Records.
- Search for and open an image.
- Near the top of the image, tap the download icon. It appears as an arrow pointing down.
- If you see the message "Due to contract restrictions, this feature is disabled," the owner of the records collection does not allow patrons to download images.
- Depending on your device, the download happens automatically, or you must save the image first. Check the online help for your device if you have questions.
Steps (Family Tree Lite)
Family Tree Lite does not allow you to view and download images.
