How do I make a memory private?

By default, all photos, documents, stories, and audio files you add to FamilySearch are publicly viewable. You can make items viewable only by you.

To make a memory private, follow these steps.

Steps (Website)

  1. Go to the Memories Gallery and click a memory you added that you want to make private.
  2. On the individual memory page, find the Information panel on the right.
  3. In the Visibility section, click Public.
  4. In the list that appears, click Private.
  5. Read the message and click Make Private.
  6. To make the item public again, use the same steps, and click Public and then Make Public.

Keep in mind that any links to a private memory that you shared with others no longer work.

Steps (Mobile Memories or Family Tree app)

  1. Tap a memory item.
  2. In the top corner of the screen, tap the three dots.
  3. Tap Details.
  4. Under Visibility, tap to make the memory private.
  5. Tap Save.
