Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can connect their FamilySearch accounts with Ancestry.com. This allows the ability to transfer and share information between family trees.

Note: The Compare and Transfer feature at Ancestry is only available to members of the Church of Jesus Christ with a connected Ancestry account.

To sign up, use the following steps:
1. Visit the Member Subscriptions page.
2. On the Ancestry tile, click Join for Free.
3. Follow the prompts to set up your free account with preferred account settings.

After you have created and linked your accounts, you can transfer 4 generations of information at a time from Family Tree to a tree on Ancestry.com.

Create a tree on Ancestry

  1. Sign in to both FamilySearch and Ancestry.
  2. On the menu bar at the top of the Ancestry page, click Trees.
  3. Click Import tree from FamilySearch.
  4. Ancestry suggests a name for your tree based on your surname. If desired, you can edit the name.
  5. By default, Ancestry trees are set as public. This allows researchers the opportunity to compare information and collaborate. However, information on living persons always remains private. If you prefer that your entire tree remain private, uncheck the box next to the message that says Allow others to view this tree.
  6. Click Save
  7. Then, click Continue. Your tree will begin transferring.
  8. After your tree has imported, the system will provide a link to your new Ancestry tree. Click the link to view your tree. You can return to your tree anytime from the main menu on the Ancestry home page by clicking on Trees. Then, from the drop-down menu, select your tree from the list.

From the profile pages for ancestors in your tree, you can see that all vital information, record sources, and immediate familial relationships have been transferred from FamilySearch.
If you would like to extend your Ancestry tree beyond the initial 4 generations, use the following steps:

Transfer information from Family Tree

  1. On the menu bar at the top of the Ancestry page, click Trees.
  2. Click the tree you want to view.
  3. Click the name of the person whose line you want to extend.
  4. Click Profile. This will take you to the person's profile page.
  5. On the top of the banner on the profile page, click the FamilySearch icon.
Notes: This option is only available for deceased individuals. If during this step you receive the error message "Your FamilySearch authorization has expired; please sign in to renew it," click Sign In so that the system can connect to your FamilySearch account. After you are connected, click the FamilySearch icon again.
  6. Click Add relatives from FamilySearch.
  7. At the bottom of the pop-up card, select the button next to Add up to 4 generations for this person.
  8. Click Continue.

A message indicates that the system is adding up to 4 generations. When the import is complete, you see the profile page. The parents appear on the right side of the page.

Can I transfer photos to and from Ancestry?

Photos and memories between Ancestry and FamilySearch must be added manually to each site.
