How do I update contact information on my account?

In your FamilySearch settings, you can update contact information, such as your email address, username, mailing address, and similar information. Contact information makes it easier for other users to collaborate with you. 

Before you begin

You are unable to change the visibility settings for some information:

  • Your username is always private. You cannot make it public.
  • Email notifications from FamilySearch go to the email address specified in the Password and Recovery Methods section of your account settings. You receive these email notifications regardless of whether you make it public.
  • Your Name and Contact ID are always public.

To see the profile information other FamilySearch users see about you when they attempt to contact you, do the following:

  1. Sign into the FamilySearch website.
  2. Click your name, then Settings, and then Profile.

Your contact name is now on the Profile tab, labeled "Contact ID."

Steps (website)

To update account information:

  1. Sign into FamilySearch
  2. In the upper-right corner, click your name, and then click Settings.
  3. Look at the top of the page. If Account is not underscored, click it.
  4. Beside each heading, click Edit to make changes within that section.
  5. To make information private, click the "Private" check box so a check appears in the box.
  6. Click Save.

To add an image:

  1. Sign into FamilySearch
  2. In the upper-right corner, click your name, and then click Settings.
  3. Click Profile.
  4. Click Add Portrait.
  5. Either drag and drop an image into the designated box or click Select to Upload in order to browse for the image.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. Open the Family Tree mobile app on an Android or Apple iOS device.
  2. Tap the 3 lines (menu) icon—lower right for Apple iOS; upper let on Android.
  3. Tap Settings
  4. Tap Account.
  5. Tap Edit beside information you want to change.
  6. Update fields and tap Save.

Update Profile—Apple iOS only

  1. From settings, tap Profile.
  2. To add a portrait, tap Add Portrait. Agree to make it visible to others and choose a source for the portrait.
  3. Use the toggles to decide whether your location is public.

On the Android app, toggle buttons to make personal information public or private are on the Account edit screen.On the Apple iOS app, toggle buttons to make personal information public or private are on the main Account screen.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

Family Tree Lite does not allow you to edit your contact information. Please sign in at our website and make your changes there.
