How do I view similar records when searching historical records online?

When you view a historical record on FamilySearch.org, you often see a list of similar records. The records could contain information about the same person.

Keep in mind that the records in this list have only been identified as similar. The match has not been confirmed. Please review the information carefully before using it in Family Tree.

Steps (website)

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.org
  2. At the top of the page, click Search
  3. Click Records.
  4. Enter your search terms, and click Search
  5. Click the search result that interests you.
  6. In the right-side panel, click View Record.
  7. On the right side of the screen, find the column labeled Similar Records. If no records were found, the column is empty.
  8. Click the similar record that interests you.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. Open the Family Tree mobile app.
  2. Tap Search Historical Records.
    • Apple iOS: Tap the 3 menu bars at the bottom of the screen. In the menu that appears, tap Search Historical Records.
    • Android: Tap the 3 menu bars at the top of the screen. In the menu that appears, tap Search Historical Records.
  3. Enter your search terms, and tap Search.
  4. Tap the search result that interests you.
  5. Scroll to find the Similar Records section.
  6. To view a record in the list, tap a name. (You do not always see a list).

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

You cannot search and attach historical records through Family Tree Lite. Please use the regular FamilySearch website or mobile app.
