How does the relationship viewer determine how I am related to someone?

In Family Tree and Memories, relationship viewer tells you how you are related to the people

Former versions of the relationship viewer calculated relationships based on 15 generations of your ancestors and 15 generations of each of their descendants.

In October 2024, the relationship viewer was enhanced to include relationships through your undivorced spouse’s line. To make this happen, the scope of calculations changed somewhat.

The calculator now identifies direct-line relationships back to AD 200, regardless of how many generations are in the line.

The calculator identifies descendancy relationships for your direct-line ancestors who were born after AD 1500.

As you work with the relationship calculator, be aware of the following:

  • If the common ancestor connecting you to an ancestor’s descendant was born before AD 1500, no relationship will be found by the relationship calculator.
  • You can be related to someone else in multiple ways. The calculator displays the shortest relationship path between the two of you.
  • If you have a family group tree, the calculator uses your preferred tree.
  • Privacy restrictions may prevent the calculator from disclosing very close relationships.
