On September 8, 2017, FamilySearch discontinued its microfilm distribution services. By 2021, all microfilms stored in the Granite Mountain Records Vault were digitized. Many of these microfilms are now accessible online from home, at FamilySearch centers, or at affiliate libraries.
Access Restrictions and Contracts
Although all microfilms have been digitized, the original record owners determine access levels. FamilySearch abides by contracts with the record owners, which restricts how and where records can be viewed.
- Copyrighted or contract-protected materials cannot be made freely available online.
- Many digitized microfilms are accessible at FamilySearch centers and affiliate libraries.
How to Find Digitized Microfilms
- Search the FamilySearch Catalog
- Use the FamilySearch Catalog to locate digitized microfilms.
- In the Catalog entry, scroll to the Film/Digital Notes section to view access options under the Format column:
- Magnifying Glass: Indicates some parts of the item are indexed.
- Camera: Allows browsing of digitized images.
- Camera with Warning Symbol: Explains that viewing restrictions apply.
- Film Reel: Indicates that FamilySearch has a physical version (microfilm or microfiche) and the record custodian denies digital access.
- No Icon: Indicates FamilySearch lacks a physical copy, and the record custodian denies access to the digital images.
- Browse the Online Image Collection
- Use the Explore Historical Images feature to browse online images and access indexed record collections.
- Search Indexed Historical Records
- Visit Search Historical Records to find and search indexed collections.
Microfilm Requests
Due to a diminishing supply of microfilm, requesting microfilm copies from the Granite Mountain Records Vault for viewing at the FamilySearch Library is no longer possible.
FamilySearch is actively working on alternative methods to provide access to restricted microfilmed records. We appreciate your patience as we develop these solutions and apologize for any inconvenience.
