How do I resolve the data problem, "Problem with Name Language"?

To solve the “Problem with Name Language” data problem, you need to edit the person’s name. Then make sure the language template matches the scripts used, that each script is in the correct field, and that each script is in a separate field.

This data problem cannot be dismissed.

Steps (website)

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch, click Family Tree, and then click Tree.
  2. Find the person that you want to edit. Open the person page.
  3. Click the pencil icon that is with the person's name.
  4. Select the correct language template for the name. The Language Template field is above the Title field.
  5. Use your computer's cut and paste feature to move each part of the name to the correct field for that set of characters. The warning message disappears when the correct characters are in the correct fields.
  6. Scroll down to the Reason This Information Is Correct field. Enter an explanation for your changes.
  7. Click Save.

Tip: By default Family Tree displays names from nonromanized languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean in their native scripts. In your account settings, you can choose to display all names in a romanized (Latin) script.

Steps (mobile app)

The Family Tree mobile app does not display data problem icons like the website does. However, for this particular data problem, you can still see and fix it by editing the person's name. If many of your ancestors have this data problem, you may find it easier to find and correct them on the FamilySearch website.

  1. Sign in to the Family Tree mobile app.
  2. Find the person that you want to edit. Open the person page.
  3. Tap the person's name.
  4. Tap Edit. If this data problem exists, you will see warnings on the screen.
  5. Select the correct language template for the name. The name of the language appears above the Title field. It is either the name of a language or the word "Other."
  6. Use your device's cut and paste feature to move each part of the name to the correct field for that set of characters. The warning message disappears when the correct characters are in the correct fields.
  7. Tap Continue.
  8. Enter an explanation for your changes.
  9. Tap Save.
