How do I update my FamilySearch profile?

Your FamilySearch profile is the information that other FamilySearch users see about you. You can update your profile to reflect your current information, including your name, Contact ID, location, and more. You can also manage privacy settings to control what others can see.

Steps (website)

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.
  2. In the upper right corner, click your name, then click Settings.
  3. Click the Profile tab.
  4. Beside each heading, click Edit to make changes.
  5. To adjust privacy, click Edit, then check or uncheck the Private box to set information as public or private.
  6. Click Save after making any changes.

Important Information About Contact ID Updates

  • Your Contact ID cannot include certain special characters or have spaces at the beginning or end.
  • When you update your Contact ID, your previous ID may still appear on FamilySearch for up to 24 hours. Additionally, if other users follow records you have modified, your old Contact ID remains visible to them until the system fully processes the update.

Additional Notes:

  • For more account settings and preferences, click the Account tab at the top of the screen. You may need to sign in again to access this section.
  • Updating your recovery contact information, including its visibility settings (public or private), does not affect the contact information on your Account page. These must be updated separately.

Steps (mobile app)

The mobile app offers fewer customization options compared to the website, and some settings are located in different sections for easier navigation on mobile devices.

To adjust your name, contact information, and more:

  1. While signed in to the Family Tree mobile app:
    • Apple iOS: In the bottom-right corner, tap the three lines (More).
    • Android: In the top-left corner, tap the three lines.
  2. Tap Settings, then select Account.
  3. Beside each heading, tap Edit to make changes. Use the Public switch to adjust privacy for each item.

To update your profile picture or location:

  1. In the Settings section, tap Profile.
  2. To change your portrait, tap Add Portrait or Edit Portrait.
  3. To adjust location privacy, toggle the Public switch next to "Country or Location" or "State or Province."
