What is a GEDCOM file?

GEDCOM is an acronym for "GEnealogical Data COMmunications."

The GEDCOM standard is a data format used to exchange genealogical information between computer programs.

Most genealogical data management programs can both import (open) and export a GEDCOM file. For example, Ancestral Quest, Roots Magic, and Legacy can import and export GEDCOM.

Many of the products found in our Solutions Gallery can use the GEDCOM format and are compatible with FamilySearch programs.

For a history of GEDCOM, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GEDCOM.
