Using the View Relationship Feature in Family Tree

The relationship viewer calculates your relationship to a person in Family Tree and displays a chart showing the direct relatives between you and the person. At the top of the chart, you can see your relationship, such as My Grandmother or My First Cousin. If no relationship was found, the viewer displays “Relationship Unknown.”

Steps (website)

Landscape, Portrait, Fan Chart, and Descendancy Views

  1. In the top menu to the right of the FamilySearch logo, click Family Tree, and then click Tree.
  2. Find the person that you want to view your relationship with.
  3. Click the person's name. In the details that pop-up, click the person's name again.
  4. On the name banner, click View Relationship.
  5. To zoom in or out, click + or -.
  6. If you see someone in the View Relationship menu that you want to view in Family Tree, click the name.
  7. To see spouses of people on the relationship path, click Show Spouses.

First Ancestor View

  1. In the top menu, click Family Tree, and then click Tree.
  2. Find the person that you want to view your relationship with.
  3. Click the person's name. A side sheet opens.
  4. In the name box, click View Relationship.
  5. To display each person's spouse in the chart, click Show Spouses. Click the same option again to remove spouses from the chart.
  6. To display a person on the chart in Family Tree, click the name. Then click either Person or Tree.
  7. To zoom in or out, click + or -.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. Open the Person details page for an ancestor.
  2. In the top-right corner, tap the 3 dots.
  3. Tap View My Relationship.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

Family Tree Lite does not show your relationship to a person in Family Tree. Please use the website instead.
