Brief History

The 7th Regiment, West Virginia Cavalry was organized from the 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry January 26, 1864. It mustered out August 1, 1865.[1]

For more information on the history of this unit, see:

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database lists 2,547 men on its roster for this unit. Roster.

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
