Category talk:Articles using the table template incorrectlyEdit This Page

From FamilySearch Wiki

This category is automatically added to pages that have incorrectly used the "Table" template. Currently this category has three pages in the wiki with this category. Instructions related to why the category was created, how the category should be used, and how the category will be managed should be added to the page. I think this category page also needs to be categorized itself, but I'm not positive because it is associated with a template. The template and category are both part of the overall maintenance process in the wiki and should be documented within the maintenance documentation. Should a template also be used for this? Don't know the answer to that because of it's association with a template to begin with. When this category page is discovered, the user has no way to know that it's associated with a template and that's why the documentation is critical and should be added to this page ASAP. Hi Fran, I have moved your comment here and added a brief explanation of why this category exists and a link to the associated template. Thank you for raising this issue. --Steve 07:05, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks Steve. The issue was raised because all the Danish-to-English and English-to-Danish word list pages were reportedly changed from functioning tables to tables that resulted in being added to this category. It took me a while to figure out what happened, but the community thought it was a virus or spam or a result of the issue a couple days ago. When they saw that this category was added to the pages and couldn't figure out who was doing it, they were very concerned. I still don't know how all those pages went from a page with tables to pages with all content moved out of a table and strung together in a big paragraph mess. I never saw a history page with the error message on the page, so I'm still a bit perplexed. --Fran 14:11, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Taking the page Oldenburg Gazetteer D as an example, this was created on March 3, 2010 and included when it was first created a call to the template {{table}}. At that time the template did not exist and where the call was placed did not have any affect, adverse or beneficial to the page. On April 14 {{table}} was created by me as a consequence of you asking about documenting the {{prettytable}} template. In doing so I did not realise that this template was being referenced in some pre-existing pages, and as the template was not being used as designed, it caused the pages to become corrupted. I have removed the {{table}} reference from the pages and the tables now look OK. Hopefully this explains how this happened. --Steve 15:32, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes it does. Thank you. And thank you for creating the new table template. When the instructions for using the table templates get into the Help documentation, I think contributors will be grateful. --Fran 17:05, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
