Early cemeteries in California generally begin in the 19th century. Burials earlier than that were mostly at Catholic churches or unrecorded.

This list includes the communities of Wilmington and San Pedro. To see Cemeteries in the City of Los Angeles or Hollywood (which is part of Los Angeles), click here.

BillionGraves cited below has tombstone photos with that information transcribed into a searchable database.

Palm Cemetery has existed at Cherry and San Antonio Drive in Long Beach since early Rancho days. It was absorbed by Sunnyside in 1923, and later by Forest Lawn. The indexing project of obituaries at Long Beach Public Library has revealed several burials at the Palm Cemetery, giving names to some of the unidentified remains. Palmdale Cemetery (Defunct)

20th Street East, North of Avenue S, Palmdale, CA
Phone: (661) 267-5100
The old Palmdale Cemetery is one of the only reminders of the early Palmdale settlement known as “Palmenthal.” About 60 families of Swiss and German descent, predominantly from Nebraska and Illinois, settled in the area in 1886, and founded a Lutheran Church. By 1899, because of drought and land deed problems, all but one family had moved away from Palmenthal. The cemetery continued to be used by settlers, but gradually it fell into disrepair. It was closed in 1979 due to incomplete record keeping.[3]
The Palmdale City Library has some of the original Lutheran church records.

Established in 1871 as Compton Rural Cemetery.
Prior to being officially named for the use of the settlers in the area, it was part of the Rancho San Pedro land grant. Markers for a few earlier burials have also been found. Volunteers have been adding all available records to FindAGrave.com. 99%+ of all interments have been entered.[4]
Many original records were lost over the years. The Genealogical Society of Utah microfilmed existing records in 1956, which includes correct information later lost. That film - FHL 2100 Item 7 - can be ordered and viewed at a Family History Center.
