Dukes was an original New York county formed in 1683 from the Elizabeth Islands, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Island all to the east of Long Island, and all now part of Massachusetts.[1]

In 1691 Dukes County was transferred to Massachusetts. There it was divided into Dukes County (Elizabeth Islands, and Martha's Vineyard) and Nantucket County.[1]

A few records of Dukes county prior to 1691 may be found at the New York State Archives in Albany. Starting in 1691 records would be found in Dukes County, Massachusetts and Nantucket County, Massachusetts.
