In a Unix environment it is a commonly needed to create or edit text files.  This is done with text editors.  There is a pleathora of text editors available which range in power and complexity.

Two complex and popular text editors are  vi and emacs.  The vi editor has the advantage of being installed on many distributions by default.

Some simple text editors are nano and gedit.

A web search would reveal many editors to choose from.
