Description

The purpose of this task is to add the introduction to church records on Ohio county pages.

This task is beginner task and requires basic experience with copying and pasting in wikitext.

You may wish to print these instructions before you begin editing.
To Print:

  • Go to the top right-hand corner of the page within the the white area.
  • Locate the word Print or the icon of a printer. Click on the icon.
  • Print.

Instructions

1. Check the Assignment Chart below to choose a county to edit.

2. Sign up on the Assignment Chart to accept the task. Sign-up instructions are posted with the Assignment Chart below.

3. For each county, you will add information to the county page by editing in wikitext. Read the general instructions then follow the wikitext link to continued task directions about using wikitext to edit this project.

  • If you have questions about editing, go to wiki help links under the heading Description.

4. Mark the Assignment Chart below to indicate you have finished the task.

5. Also, report your finished task on the Ohio FamilySearch Completed Task Google Form. Follow the instructions on the Google form. This step is important for documenting completed wiki volunteer work. Thank you!

Wikitext Editing Instructions

Locating and Adding Online County Histories on Google Books

1. Click on your chosen county name in the Assignment Chart. This will take you to your county page. 
2. Login to the FamilySearch wiki using your FamilySearch login name and password. Find the sign-in area in the top right-hand corner of the page. 
3. Scroll to the heading History. 

4. Open the History heading for editing by clicking on the pen in square on the right-hand side of the page, opposite the heading title. 

5. Click on the word wikitext in the toolbox at the top left of the edit box.

6. Open a new tab at the top right of your screen to a blank Internet page. The new tab will look like a blank tab or it will have a plus sign in it. Click inside the empty tab to open the new page. To toggle between your county page and the new Internet page you open, click your mouse inside the tab for either page.

7.Copy this URL

http://books.google.com/

8. Paste the address into the address bar at the top of the page.

9. Under "Researching A Topic" type your county name and Ohio and County History in the white search box. (Example: Mahoning County Ohio County History).

10. View the search results. If the book can be viewed online and you feel it is a good history use the following steps to add the link to the wiki.

a. Open the Google book to view.
b. Look at the URL in the address bar at the top of the page. The beginning of the URL should look like:
http://books.google.com/books?id=zxkVAAAAYAAJ
c. Copy only the part of the URL up to the end of the capital letters after the ?id=.
d. On the Google book page, click on "About this book" in the right hand column.
Make a note of the book author, title, and publication information. The title is at the top of the page. The author follows below it.
Below the words Review the publisher and publishing date are posted. ::Note that sometimes the author and the publisher are the same name for county histories.

11. Return to the wiki page you opened for editing. (Click inside the tab for the page at the top of your Internet page.)

12. Scroll to the subheading Local Histories. Hit the enter key.

13. Use the following format to enter the Google book(s) onto the wiki page.

  • (a) : (colon)
  • (b) * (star)
  • (c) The Google Book entry:
  • Author , Title in italics, Publication information in parenthesis.
  • For the author,type the last name, comma, and then the first name. If there is the name of a society or a series of authors, type them as written.
  • To make italics put two '' before and after the title. Be sure to capitalize the proper words in the title.
  • Add the publication information inside parenthesis.
  • (d) Add the link to Google Books
  • Use this format: Digital version at [URL to book Google Books].
  • Where the format states URL to book paste the URL you copied in step 10c.

14. Repeat this process for as many books as you found useful on Google Books.

15. In the "Summary" box at the bottom of the page add the words, "Added Google County Histories" and then click the Save page button.

Locating and Adding Online County Histories on Internet Archive

1. Click on your chosen county name in the Assignment Chart. This will take you to your county page.

2. Login to the FamilySearch wiki using your FamilySearch login name and password. Find the sign-in area in the top right-hand corner of the page.

3. Scroll to the heading Local Histories.

4. Open the Local Histories heading for editing by clicking on the pen in square on the right-hand side of the page, opposite the heading title.

5. Click on the word wikitext in the toolbox at the top left of the edit box.

6. Open a new tab at the top right of your screen to a blank Internet page. The new tab will look like a blank tab or it will have a plus sign in it. Click inside the empty tab to open the new page. To toggle between your county page and the new Internet page you open, click your mouse inside the tab for either page.

7. While on the new Internet page click on the following blue link Internet Archive

8. You are looking for local histories that are in digitized book form found on this website. Enter the county name and "county Ohio history" in the search box, i.e. "Mahoning County Ohio History ". Change the "All Media Types" to "American Libraries".

9. View the search results. If the book can be viewed online and you feel it is a good history use the following steps to add the link to the wiki.

a. Open the Internet Archive book to view.
b. Look at the URL in the address bar at the top of the page. The beginning of the URL should look like:
http://archive.org/details/20thcenturyhisto00sand
c. Copy only the URL.
d. On this Internet Archive book page,
Make a note of the book author, title, and publication year.
The publication year is usually in braces following the title in the heading.
Note that sometimes the author and the publisher are the same name for county histories.

11. Return to the wiki page you opened for editing. (Click inside the tab for the page at the top of your Internet page.)

12. Scroll to the subheading Local Histories . See if your book is already listed on the county page.

  • If it is, go to step 14.
  • If it is not, and there are no other county history book entries hit the enter key and go to step 13.
  • If it is not and there are other entries, find where you book would appear alphabetically in the list. Place your cursor at the end of the entry above where you want to place your new book. Hit enter on your keyboard to begin a new line. Go to step 13.

13. Use the following format to enter the Internet Archive book(s) onto the wiki page.

  • (a) : (colon)
  • (b) * (star)
  • (c) The Internet Archive Book entry:
  • Author , Title in italics, Publication information in parenthesis.
  • For the author,type the last name, comma, and then the first name. If there is the name of a society or a series of authors, type them as written.

  • (d) Add the link to Internet Archive

  • Type: Digital version at, Brace, URL, space, Internet Archive, Brace, Period.
  • Where the format states URL paste the URL you copied in step 10c.

14. If the Internet Archive book is already added to your county page, and

  • If there are already at two least online links to the book, you do not need to add the Internet Archive link.
  • If there is only one link, add the Internet Archive link by following directions outlined in step 13. 

15. Repeat this process for as many books as you found useful on Internet Archive.

16. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Added Internet Archive county histories".

17. Click on the box "Save Page". The task is complete.

18. Follow the directions in the Assignment Chart section below to report your completed task.

19. Save the page and exit. The task is complete.

Local histories are available for WikiProject Ohio Tasks-County Histories found in Google Books and Internet Archive. Assignment Chart

If you are accepting this task:

1. Sign in to the wiki at the upper right-hand corner of this page. Use your FamilySearch account username and password.
2. Open the Assignment Chart for editing by clicking on the check mark in the box at the right opposite the Assignment Table heading.
3. Place your cursor in the box under the heading Name/Date Task Accepted and opposite your county of choice.
4. Not all counties are included in the chart below. If your county is not listed, this task is not needed for your county.
5. Type 4 tildes (~). This symbol is located on the upper left-hand part of your keyboard, next to the number 1. The ~~~~ is an electronic signature and will leave your user name and date when you signed.
6. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Selected Adams County for adding Family History Center".
7. Click on the box "Save Page".
8. You are now signed up to complete this task.

  • Follow the same instructions as accepting the task, except place your cursor in the correct county box under the heading Date Completed. Change your summary sentence to something like, "Completed Adams County for societies."
