Portals with no content

I have noticed some portals have been created but no content has ever been added to the initial template. For example, most (if not all) of the Historic Counties of the Kingdom of Hungary. I propose that these be marked {{DeleteASAP}} so that they can be speedily deleted. --Steve 22:08, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

  • Agree - but links to the portals without any content should be edited so the portal page is not recreated. If there are no objections to this proposal, should the links be red (to pages not yet created) or should a stub page be created to replace to deleted portal page? --Fran 22:37, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
I am not sure I understand your proposal. Normally in any page to be deleted, all links are hunted down then deactivated then tagged to be deleted. dsammy 23:05, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
The example, Historic Counties of the Kingdom of Hungary, shows that all the historic counties have active links to county pages that are currently portal pages. If the portal pages are deleted, the links to those portal pages will still be on the Historic Counties of the Kingdom of Hungary page, only now they would be red links because the associated portals would have been deleted. Therefore, my proposal for the conversion process in this case was to make sure the links to those portal pages were changed to links to un-portal pages so that the portal pages were not accidently recreated. --Fran 23:44, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
OK for these portal without any content, any link to them should be changed from [[Portal:Someplace]] to [[Someplace]] (use What links here from the toolbox). This will change the link to a redlink. Then the portal with no content and no links to it, can be marked with {{DeleteASAP}}. --Steve 14:07, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Speeding up the process of converting portals to un-portals

At my request, Steve created the un-portal page for Utah and used the {{US-sidebar}} to create the list of US topics instead of typing the entire list. The advantage of using a template includes the speed in which the portal could be converted. The proposed change to the process for creating an un-portal page would be to use the sidebars for the major localities around the world. Steve has been working on the development of the different sidebars for the list of Topics and has more background understanding than I do at this point. As you can see the current un-portal design is not very different from the one that uses the sidebar template. For example, see Utah, England, Essex and other county pages in England as examples of un-portal pages that were created using the sidebar template. There may be other examples that I'm not aware of. Examples of un-portal pages that did not use the sidebar template include: Brazil, Iceland, Denmark, or many others. Steve has already volunteered to help with the conversion of portal pages to the un-portal page. --Fran 23:29, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Building un-portal pages using templates

Following an invitation from Fran I created the Utah page making use of a couple of templates {{US-sidebar}} and {{Infobox US State}}. I make all my contributions to the wiki using wikitext. So I would like to hear from users of the FCK editor how easy/difficult it is to understand/make changes to a page that has been created using these templates. --Steve 14:22, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
