Parish History

Great Coates St Nicolas is an Ancient Parish on the banks of the River Humber in North east Lincolnshire and to the north west of the Grimsby urban area.

The church has a 15th century tower, the nave is 14th century and the dedicatory name is spelt without an "h".

The Wesleyan methodist chapel was built in 1881 and the Primitive Methodist from 1895.

The village was a civil parish until 1968 when it and Little Coates, Lincolnshire were absorbed into Grimsby for local government purposes. It became a civil parish again in 2003.

COATES, GREAT (St. Nicholas), a parish, in the union of Caistor, wapentake of Bradley-Haverstoe, parts of Lindsey, county of Lincoln, 4 miles (W.) from Great Grimsby. [1]

Civil Registration

This parish was in the Grimsby sub-district of Caistor registration district until 1890 reorganisation when it became part of Grimsby registration district.
