In 1866 the independent Kingdom of Hannover was taken over by Prussia and became a Prussian province.
This province was divided into six regions:

The capital city was Hannover.
Please note that the spelling is different in English from German. In English, 'Hannover' is spelled with one <n>; in German with two.
