History

The community was named for Hazel Barlow, daughter of founder Joe Barlow. Hazelton is a farming district with a station of the Oregon Short Line Railroad located 28 miles West of Rupert. The rich farming district is irrigated from the North Side Canal which taps the Snake River at the Milner Dam. Frank Simmons, Melvin Roylance and James M. Mendenhall, settled the land in 1917. The total population of the Hazelton Precinct was 1,372 in 1930.

Additional history of Hazelton, Idaho and the early Mormon settlers there can be found in: Andrew Jenson. Encyclopedic History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Salt Lake City: Deseret News Publishing Company, 1941, p. 327.
