Records

Lincolnshire Archives, St. Rumbold Street, Lincoln LN2 5AB.Reference Name PL/10

The Board of Guardians for Lincoln superseded the Directors of the Poor established by a private Act of Parliament in 1796 to be responsible for the poor of the City and of the Liberties of Lincoln. These "Gilbert" Unions were generally abolished when the Poor Law Amendment Act was implemented ;in Lincoln the Union was formed in 1836. Only a few records remain of the Lincoln Directors of the Poor. They are listed below at PL/10/119/1-2 & PL/10/307/1. A baptism and burial register at PL/10/302/25 & 28 covers a few years in the period of the Directors of the Poor and then continues as Poor Law Union records.

PL/10/102-119: Clerk to the Guardians. PL/10/302-307: Workhouse Master. PL/10/401: Officer in Charge of Children's Home. PL/10/801-804: Non Poor-law duties devolving upon the Boards of Guardians.
