21 February 1798: Incorporated by the Act of the New Jersey Legislature.
8 February 1847: Atlantic Township set off.
25 February 1848: Raritan Township set off.
28 February 1887: Atlantic Highlands Township set off.
22 March 1900: Boroug of Highlands set off.
22 March 1917: Borough of Keansburg set off.
Belford, Fairview, Leonardo, Lincroft, Navesink, New Monmouth North Middletown, and Port Monmouth are census-designated places within the township. New Monmouth and Sandy Hook are part of the township.
