History

Nesna is a small coastal town located approximately 24 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The name comes from the old farm Nesna (Norse Nesnar), and is derived from the word nes 'headland'. The parish of Nesna has been in existance since the 1600’s. The municipality of Nesna was created on January 1, 1838.

Church Records

Nesna clerical district contains parish registers from the parishes of Nesna with Bardal chapel and Dønnes (Dønna) with Husby chapel. Includes Hjelpe cemetery at Sjona.
