The information in this list of Ohio Military Units comes from the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors web site (CWSS). This web site can also be searched by the name of a soldier. The Ohio Civil War Genealogy Center by the Ohio Genealogical Society uses the same data as the CWSS, but its search engine is more flexible, allowing for searches by partial name and Soundex.

  • George's Independent Company, Ohio Cavalry
    Organized for three months at Gallipolis, Ohio, July 2, 1861. Attached to Cox's Kanawha Brigade, and duty in Kanawha District, West Virginia, till September.
    Mustered out September 10, 1861.
  • Hoffman's Battalion Infantry
    Organized December, 1861, for prison guard duty at Johnson's Island, near Sandusky, Ohio. Transferred to 128th Ohio Infantry January 5, 1864.
  • Unassigned Ohio Infantry
    "Compendium of the War of the Rebellion" by Frederick H. Dyer contains no history for this unit.
  • Union Light Guard, Ohio Cavalry
    Organized at Columbus, Ohio, December 17, 1863, for duty as body guard to President Lincoln.
    Duty as guard at the White House and at the War Department and other public buildings till September, 1865. Mustered out September 9, 1865.
