SUTTON, ST. JAMES, a chapelry, in the parish of Long Sutton, union of Holbeach, wapentake of Elloe, parts of Holland, county of Lincoln, 5½ miles (S. E. by S.) from Holbeach. There are places of worship for Baptists and Wesleyans. 
Sutton St James is an ecclesiastical parish created in 1744 from a chapelry in Sutton St Mary, Lincolnshire (sometimes Long Sutton) Ancient parish.
The church originates from 1302 with the later addition of the tower in the 15th century. Restoration was made in subsequent centuries including 1879 and the clock installation in tower to commemorate those who fell in World War 1
There are both Wesleyan Methodist and Baptist chapels built in 1841 and 1813 respectively.
This parish was within the Long Sutton sub-district of Holbeach registration district
