Talk:User group meeting agenda & minutes 14 May 2008Edit This Page

From FamilySearch Wiki

We ran out of time on this one so I thought I'd roll this one over into 14 May and hopefully we'll find some time unless more pressing issues come up.

Demonstration needed on how to change text of a link whether internal or external.  Useful for masking URLs with text to make it look cleaner, who wants to see the raw URL code when you could have the subject of the page appear instead.

Useful so the flow of the article or posting doesn't get interrupted by the clutter left by displaying a raw URL.  JamesAnderson 01:08, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

The other issue - redirects, they need to be set up for at least 3 counties in USA - specifically Kings County to Brooklyn, Richmond County to Staten Island, New York County to Manhattan, Bronx County to The Bronx, rather than the (Brooklyn), (Staten Island), (Manhattan). I am aware of other similiar places, such as Richmond County to Augusta (in Georgia), and several in Virginia. This will bring this Wiki in line with the Wikipedia.org (each time I type Richmond County, New York, I get message it doesn't exist!) dsammy 00:42, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks David, and also another question.

Do you have any suggestions on how to handle the historic counties in these situations?  And also don't forget Queens County in New York as well which also included Brooklyn/Queens or at least just the one of them, my mind is fuzzy on that right now, as researchers will want to know where to find the records for those historic names. JamesAnderson 00:49, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Queens - leaves that alone. It is just Queens County, New York.  As for historic, I presume you meant, extinct, changed or transferred counties? dsammy 01:40, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I do mean the extinct ones and any that changed name or was transferred, etc.  You're right on Queens as well. Thanks.   JamesAnderson 02:00, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Here's examples:

Klamath County, California - divided and dissolved with category to Siskiyou and Humboldt counties

Alturas County, Idaho - divided and dissolved, with records in Blaine County, Idaho

Lewis and Clark Counties, Washington - transferred with simple explanation, due to division of Oregon Territory prior to statehood of Oregon.

Champoeg and Twality counties, Oregon - simply renamed, directed to category for Marion and Washington Counties, Oregon.
