Among Protestants by the order of the Consistory after 1662 local pastors in Oldenburg, for instance, conducted home visits. These visits were recorded and all members of a household including service personnel listed. The minutes of the house visitations were later called soul registers or family records.

The level of detail of such registers varies greatly. It ranges from the mere mention of the first names to detailed descriptions of the skills to read and write.
In cases where church records are no longer available, they can provide a degree of information.
