Local Museums and Historical Societies
- Brome County Historical Society and Museum
Location: 130 Lakeside
Knowlton (Québec) J0E 1V0
Telephone: (450) 243-6782
Founded in 1897, the Society operates a small museum in Knowlton but over the years has acquired an important archive of local documents, family papers, artefacts, etc. Their publication history starts in 1908 with History of Brome County, Vol. I., Vol. II appeared in 1937. An ongoing series, Yesterdays of Brome County, Vol. 1 (1979) Vol. 9 (1995) contains articles and reminiscences, mostly by local residents, who know the territory and its history in detail. Invaluable for family historians.
The Brome County Historical Society, as well as the Missisquoi County and Stanstead Historical Societies have indexed certain Cemeteries for their respective counties and would be the places to contact for information on where other local records might be deposited. However, they are all under-funded and staffed by volunteers. Do send a self-addressed envelope and international reply coupons, and do be patient. Their museums are open on a regular basis only in the summer. In addition, there are small societies depending on an ever-decreasing population to support them.
