CID identification numbers

We are once again experimenting with changing the CID notes in white text. This time we're going slowly because the last time we tried that some of our links were broken, and that was a bad week. Hopefully, this option work and the notes will be invisible to wiki readers.

Editors will still be able to see them, but I have confidence that they will ignore them. At this time we don't have another option that will work with Record Search than the CID note. Dorothy Horan

Find a better way to format the code needed to link Record Search collections to the Wiki
I was wondering if you could answer some questions that have been on my mind.
  • Why is it important not to erase or change the CID numbers that are being inserted at the end or articles about Record Search collections such as England Cheshire Nonconformist Church Records?
  • Is it important that the CID reference is embedded in a level 6 header?
  • Is it important the CID number is displayed?
  • If not could the CID number be included in comment tags for example <!-- CID ####### --> ?

Dorothy, as you may have noticed, I sent you the latest suggestions through a link in an e-mail. This subject was also discussed today in the Community Meeting as well. After some discussion, we ended up discussing the information in my Discussion page (same as what I e-mailed you). Steve, Laralee, and I have really jumped in on my proposals. Michael and Thomas, the Record Search engineers are telling me that placing the CID number in a comment will not work as the comments are not indexed.

That is good to know, Dorothy. The latest proposal is to not put it in a comment, but rather a template. Is the template text indexed (I sure hope so)? Thomas Lerman 15:29, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Format of articles about Record Search Collections

Hi Dorothy, Whether we make progress on the way that CID identification numbers are included in wiki articles to allow them to be linked to from the Record Search pages, I would like to make some changes with regards the general look and format of the Record Search Collection articles.

I have developed a template {{Record Search article}} which if added to the top of each article would help users quickly recognise the subject of the article and link to the browse/search screen for the specific records described.

Here is an example of how the template looks.

FamilySearch Record Search This article describes a collection of historical records available at FamilySearch.org.

If you have some suggestions on how it could be improved I'd be willing to work with you and/or other members of you team to refine it. It works for articles about records available and also those scheduled to be available (see England and Wales 1841 Census Population and England Cornwall Church of England Parish Registers and Bishops’ Transcripts for examples of it being used). --Steve 16:10, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Turned up a typo on the CID line for the Cornwall article above, a space was missing between the number and the 'Please...' annotation. Added the space so it will work properly. Speaking of that, might there be a way to template those lines so all that has to be done is insert the actual number, thus avoiding this type of error, which could in itself screw things up, as the system could read the word that was run together with the number as part of the number and thus not match things up? I'm hopeful that we will be able to work around the issues that have prevented a template from being used thus far. Using a template would definitely help to make the links consistent and easy to update en masse. --Steve 19:18, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
