Brief History

Vershire was granted its charter on August 3, 1781 by the Vermont State Legislature.  The commonly accepted explanation for the current name is that it was coined by the Legislature, combining VER(mont) and (New Hamp)SHIRE. The name was changed to Ely in 1878 (see The Ely War), and back to Vershire in 1882.  [1] [2]
