The Kittanning Regiment was so named because it was headquartered in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. The companies were collected from the present-day counties of Westmoreland, Greene, Fayette, Somerset, Washington, Armstrong, Allegheny, Beaver, Bedford, Fulton. It was originally formed in 1774 as a patrol on the frontier during the Pennsylvania and Virginia boundary dispute. In 1776 it was transferred to the Continental Army.
