Halifax, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, by 1848 had over 130,000 inhabitants and "numerous churches". Since most 19th century historical treatises do not provide the complete parochial makeup for this very large township, here is as complete a list of the ancient(*) Parish of St John the Baptist Halifax (Church of England) and its chapels and churches (as of 1870) as can be compiled:
