Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is in the southern part of France. It was formerly named Basses-Alpes.

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence ) was formerly part of the province of Provence. Nord-de-Provence was one of the 83 original departments created during the French Revolution on 4 March 1790. It was renamed Haute-Provence and Basses-Alpes.  On 13 April 1970 the department of Basses-Alpes was renamed Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

There are 4 Arrondissements (Districts) with the following cantons in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence:

  • Barcelonnette: Barcelonnette, Le Lauzet-Ubaue
  • Castellane: Allos-Colmars, Annot, Castellane, Entrevaux, Saint-André-les-Alpes
  • Digne-les-Bains: Barrême, Digne-les-Bains-Est, Digne-les-Bains-Ouest, La Javie, Les Mées, Mézel, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Riez, Seyne, Valensole
  • Forcalquiere: Banon, Forcalquier, Manosque-Sud-Est, Manosque-Sud-Ouest, La Motte-du-Caire, Noyers-sur-Jabron, Peyruis, Reillanne, Saint-Étienne-les-Orgues, Sisteron, Turriers, Volonne

There are 320 Communes in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, most are relatively small, usually rural communities.
