Alturas County, Idaho was created 4 February 1863 from the Idaho Territory. Parts were taken to create Custer County 8 January 1881 and Elmore County 7 February 1889, then the county was dissolved and split into Blaine and Lincoln counties 5 March 1895 and 18 March 1895 respectively to circumvent a recent state supreme court decision striking down an earlier county reorganization. Named for "mountain summits"

The county seat was Rocky Bar until 1882 when it was relocated to Hailey.

Records are kept in Blaine County.  Some have been transferred to the State Historical Society Library in Boise.
