Welcome to the page for the autonomous community of Canarias! Autonomous communities are larger jurisdictions found within Spain and may contain several provinces. It is both a political and administrative division. The autonomous communities of Spain were created in 1978. To learn more about them please read Autonomous communities of Spain. The autonomous community of Canarias or the Canary Islands is comprised of a group of islands off the western coast of Africa. The capital is shared by the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is located on the island of Tenerife while Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is located on the island of Gran Canaria.
