The Catholic parish of Ballynakill includes part of the civil parish of Ballynakill in the barony of Ballynahinch. Letterfrack is the modern name of the parish, it being the town where the parish chapel is located.

This Church of Ireland parish is located in the civil parish of Ballynakill, in the barony of Ballynahinch, on the western coast of Galway. There are two civil parishes named Ballynakill in County Galway. The other is in the barony of Leitrim. Ballinakill is a variant spelling. The church, in the town of Letterfrack, is dedicated to St. Thomas.
