Beaufort District was created in 1768 from part of Granville County.[1] See the 1768 South Carolina map.

In 1785 four counties were formed within Beaufort District: Granville, Hilton, Lincoln, and Shrewsbury. These counties never became functional, and were abolished in 1798. They were counties in name only.[2]

In 1800, South Carolina abolished administrative districts and went with the county concept, However they called the counties, districts until 1868, after the Civil War. [3]
