1871 First British Columbia census (incomplete).

1881 First Canadian census to include British Columbia. (For an index, see the British Columbia Genealogical Society listed in British Columbia Societies.)

The 1891 and 1901 censuses are also available to the public. The Family History Library has these censuses (1871–1901) on microfilm. At the Automated Genealogy site you will find indexes to three key Canadian censuses: 1901, 1906, and 1911. The index to the 1901 census is virtually complete, and the other two are nearing completion (note that in 1906 only three provinces were surveyed). Go to http://www.automatedgenealogy.com .
