Question #1: The death index includes the film number where the death certificate is found but the film is not listed in the catalog. How can I get a copy of the death certificate?
Answer #1: These films are restricted by request of the British Columbia Archives and are not available for viewing at FamilySearch Centers.
A copy of the death certificate can be obtained by contacting the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency.
It is recommended that you access the following website British Columbia Archives' Vital Events Indexes for more information about using British Columbia online indexes to access the records.
Question #2: Why have some of the death records been removed?
Answer #2: The collections currently available online at FamilySearch are very limited. When FamilySearch received permission from the records custodian to link images of the death registers with the indexed information, certain new restrictions were applied. This necessitated removing some of the previously published names from this collection. Please refer to Answer #1 above for more information about access to these records. The description of the collection is somewhat misleading as many of the previous records are no longer visible.
Question #3: When I do a search in this collection I notice that the majority of the search results do not have an attached image. Are these images available?
Answer #3: The record custodian has requested that all images for children who were born within the last 100 years and who died within one year of their birth be restricted. Unfortunately, if there are any images that fall in that category on a digital film, then the whole film is restricted. Please see Answer #1 above for more information about access to these records.
