The Canary Islands (Spanish Islas Canarias) (28° 06'N, 15° 24'W) are an archipelago of the Kingdom of Spain consisting of seven islands of volcanic origin in the Atlantic Ocean. They are located off the north-western coast of Africa.  They form an autonomous community of Spain.

The whistling language of La Gomera is making a comeback. This unusual form of communication - called Silbo Gomero - had been used by the islanders to send messages across the rugged valleys of La Gomera since the 1400s. When the elderly speakers of this melodic tongue started dying off, the island's government recently made Silbo Gomero required study for all school children.... "Historically, from the earliest settlers on the Canaries, the Silbo language was the mobile phone of the period," said Dr Francisco Rivero, a researcher in the University of La Laguna in the Canary Islands.
