Superintendencies of Indian Affairs were established in the United States to oversee the activities and interaction of Indians and non-Indians. After the organization of the Office of Indian Affairs in 1824, these superintendencies reported to that office. By the late 1870s, all of the superintendencies had been abolished and the agencies were reporting directly to the Office of Indian Affairs in Washington, DC.
