History

Coeur d'Alene Tribe lived in this area next to the Coeur d’Alene Lake which is the heart of the town. French-speaking fur traders name the lake; they believed the Indians were good traders. In 1878 Fort Sherman was established, the town was incorporated in 1887. There were lake steamers, lodging, mining and fur trading in the town. As early as 1890, Coeur d’Alene served as the railroad and steamboat station between the mines in Silver Valley and the smelters. In 1900’s the small frontier village had a major timber boom which caused the population to explode.
