The Confederation was formed by Napoleon in 1806 with 16 German states initially. Later 19 more states were added. It lasted until 1813. It was formed after Napoleon's defeat of Francis II of Austria and Alexander II of Russia in the Battle of Austerlitz. It marked the end of the German Holy Roman Empire.
